Our Story
One day you find yourself cleaning your daughter’s closet and you come across that beautiful dress that made her Prom night so very special. And you think to yourself, what do you do with it?
Do you leave it hanging there as a memory? Well, isn’t that why you took all those photo graphs? Can’t imagine just dropping it into a local clothes bin box in some supermarket parking lot. Or, goodness knows “throwing it away”….NEVER!!
Well, that is just what three women in Taunton, Massachusetts thought. Some of our children were still too young for proms, but with so many holiday dresses in their closets, we kept passing them back and forth getting as much use out of the pretty little dresses as we could. Thankfully we had each other to pass them on to. But what about people who didn’t have someone to pass them onto, or more importantly, receive them from? Most especially for such a special night as “PROM NIGHT”.
When you think of it, how many dresses just stay hanging in closets forever? Never again to see the light or more aptly “moonlight of day” again? Well, that got us thinking about how they could shine once again. Especially after seeing a brief interview on “The Oprah Winfrey Show”. It was about a Chicago-based outfit that catered to the needs of Inner-city teens who couldn’t afford to buy the prom attire needed to attend their local high school prom. Now when you come right down to it, that could happen anywhere, in any city here in America.
The cost for prom attire is getting further and further out of a teen’s grasp. Whether Inner-city, the Suburbs, Rural areas or even the affluent communities. All are feeling the crunch. Sadly enough, our area wasn’t any different. If they could afford the cost of the tickets, then the attire was out of reach. If they bought the outfit, then the tickets were unobtainable.
So the three of us jumped into action and there you have it. The inspiration that ignited the Fairy GodMother Project of Massachusetts, Inc. and the start of the “Princess Boutiques”.
These boutiques are held once a year in the locations of Taunton, MA and in the Metro-West Area. Where teens are able to receive “FREE” prom attire and some accessories in hopes of ensuring them a “Night of Enchantment”.
The “original three” have now become a group of several very dedicated women who make up the Board of Directors. They, along with caring, hardworking volunteers throughout New England help make our cause the success it is.
It takes a great deal of magic to put together a Princess Boutique, wouldn’t you like to be a Fairy GodMother for a day?
